FAQs

What is a palette knife used for?

Palette knives can be used to:

  • Mix paint colours

  • Apply paint to a canvas

  • Add texture to painted surfaces

  • Create marbled effects

How do you mix colours with a palette knife?

Set up your paint blobs around the edge of your painting palette. Then scoop up the first colour onto your palette knife and place it in a clear area of your palette. Wipe the palette knife with a clean rag.  Then take the next colour and add it right next to the first colour.

Mix the two paints together by moving the palette knife in a circular motion.  Add pressure by pressing down on the metal blade of the palette knife. Constantly turn the paint over until it starts to blend. Then just add more paint as desired.

How do I choose a palette knife?

Choosing a painting knife really depends on how you plan to use it. If you're just using it to mix paint, a standard palette knife with an elongated tip will be your go to. If you're using it to paint, you may want to opt for a painting knife set so you can experiment.
