Canvas Rolls

Have the freedom to paint for as long as the roll of canvas material can unravel. Why limit yourself to the sizes of pre-made canvases? Canvas rolls come in lengths from 1.3m all the way up to 2.1m wide. Primed rolls come complete with acid-free acrylic primer, while the unprimed canvas material is of high grade European linen, an exciting surface for oil and acrylic painters.

Types of canvas roll material

Fine tooth or medium tooth, primed or unprimed, we stock rolls in a variety of fabrics.

Cotton - Cotton Canvas is affordable and can be stretched very easily. It is possible to stretch cotton tighter than linen without straining the wooden support around the canvas. A properly prepared cotton canvas will last a long time and is the most popular surface for oil and acrylic painting, especially for students.

Linen (Belgian or Italian) - Linen is strong and durable, and remains the preferred surface for many artists but it is more expensive than cotton duck. It is made from the fibres of the flax plant. If you want your painting to last, then a linen canvas is a sound investment.

FAQs

What is a canvas roll?

A canvas roll is an unstretched length of canvas on a roll. They are usually available primed or unprimed. Priming is essential if you're using oil paints.

How do canvas rolls work?

The beauty of primed canvas rolls is that you can unravel the material and just start painting as you like! Alternatively, you can cut the canvas to fit a specific size of stretcher or frame. If you’re cutting the canvas with a future stretcher or frame in mind, always err on the side of too much canvas as any excess can be cut away.

Which canvas roll is best?

Canvas is graded into weights the higher the number the thicker the canvas, a thicker canvas with be less prone to sagging tearing and will be able to accept greater volumes of paint, thicker canvas is also better for re-stretching the painting should you need to transport the finished work.
